The practice

Work that puts you inside the frame.

Walk-through installations, letters that arrive at your house, briefings handed to strangers, small ceremonies staged in ordinary rooms. We work at the scale of one person at a time, then repeat it a hundred times.

Nothing here is a spectacle you watch from a seat.

Most things begin with an envelope.

Plate IV · Background

A small workshop for large feelings.

WhimsyLab started because we kept making things that did not fit in a theatre — pieces that needed a corridor, a letterbox, or a stranger willing to play along.

We come out of immersive and participatory performance, and we have spent years learning the unglamorous half of it: how to look after people in the dark, how to write a rule someone will actually follow, how to build a room that can be struck in a night and rebuilt the next week.

The lab part is literal. Most of what we make is prototyped badly in front of a small audience before it is made properly for a larger one.

The team

Four hands, at least.

Watch the fortune teller open and close — or pick a name. Three of these chairs are still warm from whoever sits in them next.
